Affair and Infidelity

Affirming, non-judgmental counseling to help individuals and couples recover from affairs, rebuild trust, and create a stronger foundation—together or apart.

Discovering your partner has engaged in an affair or infidelity can immediately lead to the question: “Should we end the relationship now, or should we try to work through this?” For some, the answer feels simple. For others, the situation is far more complex—especially when factors such as children, shared responsibilities, emotional attachment, or uncertainty make the decision less clear.

The shock of infidelity often triggers intense emotions, including betrayal, anger, confusion, grief, and disbelief. Even when you desperately want answers, there may not be a straightforward explanation for the lingering “why?” Couples and individuals can benefit from infidelity counseling to understand what happened, process painful emotions, and explore what healing might look like—whether together or separately.

Why Might Someone Engage in Affairs or Infidelity?

There is no single or simple explanation for why infidelity happens. People engage in affairs for many different reasons, and these reasons often reflect deeper emotional or relational challenges. Contributing factors may include a lack of intimacy, unresolved conflict, or ongoing disconnection within the relationship. In some cases, impaired judgment from substance use, struggles such as sex addiction, or underlying issues like low self-esteem, depression, or avoidance of difficult emotions can also play a role.

While understanding the “why” can be important, it does not automatically mean a relationship is beyond repair. Many couples are able to rebuild trust, strengthen communication, and create a healthier foundation with the support of couples therapy or infidelity counseling.

If both partners are willing to engage in the healing process, repair is possible.

Intimacy, Communication and Miscommunication

Many couples never have “the boundary talk”—the conversation where each partner clearly defines what infidelity, cheating, or crossing a line means to them. Instead, people often assume that the boundaries or expectations from past relationships will naturally carry into the next.

This is not an excuse for breaking a boundary. But it does highlight why open, honest communication is essential—especially after trust has been hurt. What one partner considers cheating (for example, forming an emotional connection with someone else), another partner may not view the same way.

Situations that often fall into this gray area include:

  • A kiss without any additional sexual contact
  • Casual hookups
  • Having an active dating profile
  • Watching pornography
  • Visiting adult entertainment clubs
  • Developing emotional intimacy with someone outside the relationship
  • Sending flirtatious or sexual messages/photos to someone else
  • Having more than one partner or navigating open relationship dynamics

Clear communication—before and after these moments—helps couples understand each other’s expectations, repair trust where possible, and navigate intimacy with more clarity and respect.

How Counseling Can Help You and Your Relationship After Discovering an Affair or Infidelity

Counseling—whether through individual therapy or couples therapy—can provide a safe, supportive space to heal after the discovery of an affair or infidelity. Therapy helps individuals and couples process what happened, understand its impact, and explore whether and how to rebuild trust moving forward.

In therapy, survivors can explore and address concerns such as:

  • Exploring your emotions related to the situation and understanding what these feelings mean about you, your partner, and your relationship as a whole. (Often, part of healing involves grieving the relationship as you thought it was and facing the reality of what it is now.)
  • Gaining clarity on how the situation occurred and learning strategies to prevent similar breaches in the future.
  • Establishing clear rules or agreements—either individually or with your partner—on how to move forward to rebuild safety and trust.
  • Identifying and addressing long-term issues that may have contributed to the infidelity, whether rooted in individual struggles or relationship dynamics.

Counseling offers guidance, structure, and tools to support healing, understanding, and informed decision-making as you navigate the path forward.

Tips on Healing from Affairs and Infidelity

Healing after discovering an affair or infidelity is a deeply personal process, and there is no “right” timeline. These tips can help support your emotional well-being as you navigate this difficult experience:

Advocate for Yourself to Your Partner
You have every right to express how the situation made you feel and how it has affected you. When sharing your emotions, try to focus on communicating the impact of the actions—rather than placing blame. This approach can foster clearer, more productive conversations and reduce defensiveness from both sides.

Lean on Your Support System
Feeling alone after discovering infidelity is completely normal—but you don’t have to go through this on your own. Whether or not you and your partner pursue couples counseling, having your own therapist is essential. Turning to trusted friends, family members, or a confidant can also help you process emotions between therapy sessions and remind you that you have support during this challenging time.

Practice Self-Care
The emotional shock of infidelity can be overwhelming. Pay attention to what your mind and body need during this period. Engage in grounding, nurturing routines—even small acts of self-care can help prevent you from slipping into cycles of insecurity, sadness, or rumination. Caring for yourself is not selfish; it is a crucial part of healing.
