What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a proven type of treatment for many different issues. You and your therapist can choose to use CBT to treat your mental health concerns and symptoms. CBT is well-studied and shown to be effective for many issues.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is based on two basic principles. As the name suggests, these two pieces are cognitive and behavioral. Let's break those two parts down a bit more, to get to the heart of what this therapy actually does.
"Cognitive"
The cognitive piece refers to your thoughts. Many of us go through our day without realizing how much our thoughts impact our emotions! It turns out that modifying our thought patterns gives us a great deal of power over our emotions, and, in turn, our mental well-being. A CBT-trained therapist can help you identify the thoughts that are not serving you. Then, challenge the truthfulness of these thoughts. And, finally, start to change your thought patterns so that you can live a happier, less stressful life!
"Behavioral"
The second part of CBT is the behavioral piece. Often, our behaviors impact our mood and mental health. But, we don’t realize which behaviors make us feel good and which make us feel bad. A CBT trained therapist can give you the tools to determine which is which. First, you'll take a step back and look at activities in your day-to-day life. Then, decide which of those activities is serving your goals, and which are not. Your therapist can also suggest new behaviors that have been studied and shown to improve your well-being. Then, suggest specific behaviors that will help stop the difficult symptoms that you may be facing.
