Disordered Eating Support

Struggling with food, body image, or constant guilt around eating — but don’t identify with having an eating disorder?

At Golden Vibes Counseling, we understand that your relationship with food is deeply personal. If you’re struggling with food rules, guilt after eating, body image distress, or cycles of restriction and overeating — but don’t identify with having a formal eating disorder — you are not alone.

We offer support for disordered eating behaviors in a compassionate, non-pathologizing space focused on healing your relationship with food, your body, and yourself.

What Is Disordered Eating?

Disordered eating refers to irregular or unhealthy eating behaviors that may not meet the clinical criteria for a diagnosed eating disorder — but still impact your mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Disordered eating can include:

  • Chronic dieting or yo-yo dieting
  • Obsessive calorie tracking or food control
  • Skipping meals to “make up” for eating
  • Fear foods or rigid food rules
  • Emotional eating
  • Guilt or shame after eating
  • Exercising to compensate for food
  • Preoccupation with weight or body size

These patterns often develop slowly and can feel normalized by diet culture. But if food feels stressful, controlling, or emotionally loaded — that matters.

Eating Disorders vs. Disordered Eating: What’s the Difference?

While they exist on a spectrum, there are important distinctions.

Eating Disorders (Clinical Diagnoses)

Eating disorders are formally diagnosed mental health conditions defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR) and typically require specialized treatment.  Some examples include, but not limited to:

  • Anorexia nervosa – Persistent restriction of food intake leading to significantly low body weight, intense fear of gaining weight, and body image distortion.

  • Bulimia nervosa – Recurrent binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors such as purging, fasting, or excessive exercise.

  • Binge-eating disorder – Recurrent binge eating episodes without compensatory behaviors, often accompanied by distress and loss of control.

  • Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder – Restrictive eating not driven by body image concerns but by sensory issues, fear of consequences, or low appetite.

Eating disorders often require coordinated care that may include medical providers, dietitians, and higher levels of treatment.

At Golden Vibes Counseling, we do not treat active, clinically severe eating disorders. If you need that level of care, we will gently help connect you to the appropriate specialized resources.

Disordered Eating (Subclinical Patterns)

Disordered eating does not meet full diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder — but can still cause significant distress and disruption.

You might be experiencing disordered eating if:

  • You’re constantly thinking about food or weight

  • You feel “good” or “bad” based on what you ate

  • You restrict during the week and overeat on weekends

  • You struggle to eat intuitively or trust your hunger

  • Your self-worth feels tied to your body

Disordered eating is common, especially among women, high-achievers, athletes, postpartum moms, and individuals navigating major life transitions.

And it is absolutely worthy of support.

Signs It Might Be Time to Reach Out

If food feels stressful instead of nourishing, or you find yourself feeling out of control around certain foods, it may be time to seek support. You might notice you’re stuck in a restrict–binge cycle — trying to be “good” during the week only to feel frustrated or defeated later. Body image concerns may be impacting your confidence, your relationships, or your sense of self. And maybe, more than anything, you simply want a healthier, more peaceful relationship with food and your body.

You do not need a diagnosis to deserve care.
