Emotional Support Animal (ESA) Letters at Golden Vibes Counseling Center

When an emotional support animal is part of your mental health care, our licensed therapists provide professional ESA letters with compassion and care.

Emotional Support Animal vs. Therapy Animal vs. Service Animals

Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) are animals that provide their owners with relief from emotional distress related to mental health concerns or psychological disabilities. ESAs do not require specialized training, but they must be evaluated and approved by a mental health professional as beneficial for someone who struggles to function normally without their support. Unlike service animals, emotional support animals are not typically permitted in most public spaces—such as grocery stores or gyms—even with an ESA letter, unless the business gives specific permission.

Therapy animals are used in clinical settings—such as outpatient treatment centers, hospitals, and schools—to support therapeutic work. These animals are selected for their calm temperament and must complete training to remain obedient and steady. Therapy animals are always accompanied by their handler in these settings.

Service animals assist individuals with physical disabilities or limitations, such as visual impairments. These animals are trained to detect specific cues—like obstacles for someone with low vision—and to take action, such as guiding their owner safely away from barriers. They are task-trained and considered essential aids rather than companions.

Best Qualities of an Emotional Support Animal (ESA)

While ESAs do not require specialized training, certain qualities can make them especially supportive and effective in easing stress, emotional distress, and disability-related symptoms. Ideal characteristics for an emotional support animal include being:

  • Obedient
  • Loving and affectionate
  • Easy-going and social
  • Calm with a gentle temperament

Animals with these traits are often better able to provide consistent comfort, stability, and emotional relief for their owners.

How Would Obtaining an ESA Letter be Helpful?

An Emotional Support Animal (ESA) letter can make a meaningful difference for individuals managing mental health conditions. Under the American Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Fair Housing Act (FHA), people with qualifying mental health needs are protected from discrimination for having—or needing—an emotional support animal.

An ESA letter serves as official documentation from a licensed mental health professional, confirming that the animal provides necessary emotional or psychological support. With a valid ESA letter for housing, individuals can:

  • Secure rental housing even when a property has “no pets” policies
  • Request reasonable accommodations without additional pet fees
  • Live with the support they need, without fear of being denied or displaced

Overall, an ESA letter helps ensure fair treatment, housing access, and emotional stability for those who benefit from the presence of an emotional support animal.

What Do I Need to Do to Obtain an ESA Letter? What Can I Expect?

The first step in obtaining an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) letter is to schedule an intake appointment with a licensed provider at Golden Vibes Counseling Center. Your provider will meet with you over multiple sessions to fully understand your needs, symptoms, and how an emotional support animal may assist you in daily functioning.

After completing a thorough assessment, your clinician will write an official ESA letter that includes your diagnosis and any related limitations. This documentation serves as certified proof of your need for an emotional support animal and can be used to request housing accommodations and other protections.

Golden Vibes Counseling Center ensures the process is thoughtful, ethical, and tailored to your well-being.

Disabilities That Can Benefit From an ESA Letter

While many people experience therapeutic benefits from having a pet, some individuals may gain significant emotional relief and improved daily functioning with an Emotional Support Animal (ESA). An ESA letter can be especially helpful for those managing mental health conditions or psychological disabilities that impact quality of life.

Some of the most common disabilities and mental health concerns that can benefit from an ESA letter include:

Emotional support animals can provide comfort, reduce distress, and offer grounding during difficult moments—making them a valuable part of a holistic mental health plan.
