Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) Therapy
Break free from OCD and anxiety by facing fear with confidence. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy helps you retrain your brain, reduce compulsions, and regain control of your life
What Is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) Therapy?
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a highly effective, evidence-based form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and is widely recognized as the gold standard treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Unlike traditional talk therapy, which focuses on insight alone, ERP is an active, skills-based approach designed to help you confront anxiety and reduce the compulsive behaviors that interfere with daily life.
ERP works by gently and intentionally helping you face the thoughts, images, sensations, or situations that trigger fear—without engaging in the rituals or avoidance behaviors that keep anxiety stuck. Over time, this process teaches your brain that anxiety is uncomfortable but not dangerous, and that you are capable of tolerating uncertainty without relying on compulsions.
How Does ERP Therapy Work?
ERP follows a structured, step-by-step process that targets the anxiety-compulsion cycle at its core:
Exposure
You gradually and intentionally expose yourself to anxiety-provoking thoughts, situations, or triggers. Exposures are done in a planned and supportive way, starting with lower-level fears and building toward more challenging ones.
Response Prevention
After exposure, you practice resisting the urge to perform compulsive behaviors or mental rituals. This step is key—by not engaging in the compulsion, your brain learns that anxiety naturally rises and falls on its own.
Through repeated practice, your nervous system begins to habituate, meaning the anxiety response weakens over time. You learn that feared outcomes are unlikely and, even if discomfort arises, you can handle it.
Who Can Benefit From ERP Therapy?
Although ERP is best known for treating OCD, it is also highly effective for a range of anxiety-related conditions. ERP may be helpful if you struggle with:
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – including contamination fears, checking behaviors, symmetry concerns, intrusive thoughts, and mental compulsions
- Phobias – such as fear of flying, heights, needles, or animals
- Social Anxiety Disorder – fear of judgment, embarrassment, or social interactions
- Panic Disorder – fear of panic attacks or bodily sensations
- Eating-related anxiety – reducing fear and avoidance around food, body image, or eating situations
Benefits of Exposure and Response Prevention
ERP is backed by decades of research and clinical success. Benefits of ERP therapy include:
- Long-Term Relief – ERP builds lasting skills rather than short-term symptom management
- Reduced Anxiety – triggers lose their power as your nervous system learns safety
- Increased Confidence – facing fears builds resilience and self-trust
- Less Time Spent on Compulsions – freeing mental and emotional energy
- Improved Quality of Life – greater freedom in relationships, work, and daily routines
What to Expect During ERP Therapy
Starting ERP can feel intimidating, but the process is collaborative, supportive, and paced intentionally.
- Assessment & Education – understanding your triggers, compulsions, and anxiety patterns
- Fear Hierarchy – creating a personalized roadmap from least to most distressing situations
- Guided Practice – completing exposures with support and structure
- Between-Session Practice – applying skills in real-life situations
- Ongoing Progress Review – adjusting goals as confidence and tolerance grow
You are never forced into exposures you are not ready for. Therapy moves at a pace that balances
Take the First Step Toward Freedom
Living with OCD or chronic anxiety can feel exhausting and limiting. ERP therapy offers a proven path forward—one that helps you stop avoiding fear and start reclaiming your life. With the right tools and support, it is possible to loosen anxiety’s grip and move toward lasting change.
If you’re ready to face fear with clarity, confidence, and compassion, ERP can help you get there.

"I have worked with Josh for 4 years and would definitely not be where I am today without him. I have been in and out of therapy for 15 or so years and Josh is by far the best therapist I have ever had. Sessions are not lectures but a sort of collaboration, where you are the driver and Josh will offer navigation suggestions, but you ultimately decide where you would like to go."

"I worked with my therapist for about a year and a half, and doing so really helped me get to a place where I could move forward with my dissertation and my life. His style made me feel comfortable and supported, and I left sessions feeling better. I also appreciated that the administrative side of Golden Vibes worked smoothly."
