Healing From Generational and Complex Trauma
Heal the wounds you didn’t choose, and break patterns that no longer serve you. Therapy for generational and complex trauma helps you reclaim safety, identity, and emotional balance—so healing can move forward, not just survive.
When many people think of trauma, they picture one overwhelming event—such as an accident or natural disaster. While those experiences can be deeply impactful, some of the most profound emotional wounds develop over time or are inherited through family systems.
Generational trauma and complex trauma often shape how you see yourself, how you relate to others, and how safe the world feels. These experiences may not always be linked to one clear memory, but their effects can be felt daily. Understanding this type of trauma is a powerful first step toward healing. It can be done alone, however is most impactful when paired with a therapist who can help process and heal generational trauma both collectively and individually.
What Is Generational Trauma?
Generational trauma—also known as intergenerational or transgenerational trauma—occurs when the effects of trauma are passed down through families. This can happen through learned behaviors, emotional patterns, nervous system responses, or unspoken family dynamics.
If previous generations experienced war, displacement, abuse, oppression, addiction, or extreme hardship, their survival strategies may have become normalized. You may carry anxiety, hypervigilance, guilt, or grief without fully understanding where it originated.
Common signs of generational trauma include:
- A persistent sense of danger or mistrust
- Emotional distance or silence within family relationships
- Unspoken family secrets or taboo topics
- Repeating unhealthy relational or parenting patterns
- Feeling responsible for others’ emotions
Healing generational trauma allows you to honor what your family survived while choosing a healthier path forward.
What Is Complex Trauma (C-PTSD)?
Complex trauma—often referred to as Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD)—develops from repeated or prolonged trauma where escape was not possible. This commonly occurs in childhood but can also result from long-term abusive relationships, neglect, or chronic emotional harm in adulthood.
Unlike single-incident trauma, complex trauma impacts identity, emotional regulation, and self-worth.
Common features of complex trauma include:
- Emotional dysregulation or intense mood swings
- Chronic shame, guilt, or feeling “broken”
- Difficulty trusting others or maintaining boundaries
- Dissociation or feeling disconnected from your body
- A harsh inner critic or deep fear of abandonment
These responses are not flaws—they were adaptive survival strategies.
Cognitive Defusion Traumas Matters
Unresolved trauma does not fade on its own. Instead, it often shows up in relationships, parenting, self-esteem, and mental health.
Healing generational trauma helps break cycles so pain is not passed down to future generations. Healing complex trauma helps you reclaim your identity, learning that your nervous system learned these responses to protect you—and that new ways of living are possible.
Therapeutic Approaches for Deep Trauma Healing
Healing from complex and generational trauma requires safety, patience, and body-based care. Because trauma lives in both the mind and nervous system, a holistic approach is essential.
Trauma-Informed Care
Sessions are paced intentionally, prioritizing safety, consent, and emotional regulation at every step.
Somatic & Body-Based Therapies
Approaches like Somatic Experiencing help regulate the nervous system, release stored tension, and rebuild a sense of safety within the body.
EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories that feel “stuck,” without requiring detailed verbal retelling.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Internal Family Systems therapy helps you understand and heal inner parts—such as the wounded child or inner critic—reducing shame and internal conflict
“You are the pause in the pattern—and the beginning of something new."
Break the Cycle and Reclaim Your Life
You are not defined by what happened to you—or by what your family endured before you. Healing is possible, and support makes it safer and more sustainable.
If these experiences resonate with you, you don’t have to navigate them alone. With the right tools and compassionate care, it’s possible to build a future rooted in connection, emotional safety, and resilience.
