Marriage & Couples Therapy
Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new.
– Ursula K. Le Guin
Enhancing Love in Couples Therapy & Marriage Counseling
Pursuing love is something on which society is hyper-focused. Nearly every story we are told, likely as early as we can recall, has either a love story in it or has a love story as its main focus. Love is hardwired into us. In order to feel emotionally safe and secure, it is reinforced for us that we need someone with whom we can feel completely vulnerable.
Therefore, it makes sense that love and romance give us a profound sense of joy, thrill, and satisfaction.
The opposite is also true. It’s very difficult not to feel an abundance of distress and emotional pain if our romantic relationship is chaotic, numbed, or strained. Throw in all the advice available to us online and from people we know, it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed, lost, or stuck. At some point in our lives, we all have struggled with the weight of love’s pursuit. This is why Golden Vibes Counseling Center offers couples therapy and marriage counseling for consenting adults in any situation.
There is no shame in saying you need a couples therapist for support!
Admitting that couples therapy is needed for your relationship is difficult. Love is “supposed to” just happen or “be easy” and “feel right,” right? Love is always changing and evolving. The deeper we connect, the longer we are together. The longer we are together and the more attached we become, the more effort is needed to make love endure, not less. As time goes on, it’s hard not to get comfortable and fall back on societal messaging and our family of origin dynamics.
These tell us we should be masters of something we weren’t instructed how to do, and an incredibly important aspect of our lives then becomes something we judge our self-worth upon. At Golden Vibes Counseling Center we have seen this create a cycle of trial and error, which can put us in very confusing, anxious, and lonely states of being.
We Place A Lot of Pressure On Ourselves
Individuals often place high demands on themselves, their partners, and the expectations of role fulfillment they have for them. Esther Perel, a well-known couples therapist, and author says, “Today, we turn to one person to provide what an entire village once did: a sense of grounding, meaning, and continuity. At the same time, we expect our committed relationships to be romantic as well as emotionally and sexually fulfilling. Is it any wonder that so many relationships crumble under the weight of it all?”
We set ourselves up and blindly create high expectations on the roles our partners are supposed to fill and excel at. We judge ourselves harshly for how good we are at being a partner against this difficult standard, and we do the same to new partners and/or partners we have been with for decades. We often start pondering if we are “good enough” or how “good enough” our partners are. It is easy to feel helpless when you’re lost in these thoughts and feelings.

What Can I Expect from Couples Therapy at Golden Vibes?
Couples Therapy typically starts with the partners attending their first session together. Then, each partner has an individual session with their therapist. This happens so your couples therapist can get to know each partner’s history and unique perspective on what brings them to therapy. After that, all sessions are with the partners present. Please note, that couples therapy and marriage counseling are not about fighting mediation or identifying who is right and who is wrong. It is about examining communication patterns together and identifying the emotional stories that are within them. Couples therapy is less about identifying “fair fighting” techniques and more about improving connection, communication, and healing from disagreements.
Anyone can seek therapy for their relationships. Maybe you have only been dating for a few months, but you and your partner want to work through smaller issues to prevent them from becoming larger. Maybe you have been feeling stuck and strained in your relationship for some time and desire to find a path toward healing. No matter your relationship status or level of distress, it is healthy to explore how to grow in your relationship.

"I have worked with Josh for 4 years and would definitely not be where I am today without him. I have been in and out of therapy for 15 or so years and Josh is by far the best therapist I have ever had. Sessions are not lectures but a sort of collaboration, where you are the driver and Josh will offer navigation suggestions, but you ultimately decide where you would like to go."

"I worked with my therapist for about a year and a half, and doing so really helped me get to a place where I could move forward with my dissertation and my life. His style made me feel comfortable and supported, and I left sessions feeling better. I also appreciated that the administrative side of Golden Vibes worked smoothly."
