Treatment for OCD
OCD Therapy That Works—Without Judgment or Shame
Our experienced therapists at Golden Vibes Counseling offer specialized OCD treatment using evidence-based approaches like ERP and CBT to help you manage obsessive thoughts, reduce compulsive behaviors, and find lasting relief.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is more than simply preferring things a certain way. OCD isn’t a label for liking things neat, organized, or specific. You may hear phrases like “I’m so OCD about this” or “It’s just my OCD,” but those statements don’t reflect the real experience of people living with OCD.
They also don’t capture the very real challenges addressed through effective OCD treatment.Living with OCD can feel exhausting, overwhelming, and isolating. At Golden Vibes Counseling , we specialize in compassionate, evidence-based therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder—helping you reduce intrusive thoughts, resist compulsions, and regain control of your life. Using approaches like Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), we support you in building confidence, flexibility, and long-term relief in a safe, affirming therapeutic space.
You are not your thoughts—and effective help is available.
What is OCD?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is often misunderstood as simply liking things neat, orderly, or “just so.” While behaviors like handwashing or organizing can be symptoms, OCD can present itself in many different ways.
OCD may involve intrusive fears of harming yourself or others, a persistent sense that something isn’t “just right,” or intense worry about acting immorally or violating religious beliefs (sometimes referred to as scrupulosity). These are just a few examples—OCD takes many forms, and each person’s experience is unique.
OCD is primarily characterized by:
- Intrusive thoughts or images (obsessions): Unwanted, repetitive thoughts that feel difficult to control and often cause anxiety or distress.
- Repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions): Actions or rituals performed to reduce the discomfort created by these obsessions.
OCD manifests in a variety of forms
For example, someone with OCD centered around fears of harming others may become consumed by the thought that they accidentally hit someone while driving. This intrusive belief can trigger intense anxiety and feel impossible to ignore. In response, they may feel compelled to drive back to the location to check for signs that an accident occurred. While a single check might reassure someone without OCD, a person with OCD often feels driven to return again and again. Although each check brings brief relief, it ultimately reinforces the cycle—strengthening both the obsession and the compulsion.
While intrusive thoughts are common, individuals with OCD often find themselves trapped in a repetitive loop where thoughts and behaviors feed off one another, making it increasingly difficult to break the cycle on their own.
Common obsessions include:
- Fears related to contamination: Ongoing worries about germs, illness, or becoming contaminated.
- Worries about causing harm: Intrusive fears about accidentally or intentionally hurting yourself or others.
- Scrupulosity (moral or religious concerns): Persistent anxiety about moral correctness, sin, or violating personal or religious values.
- Relationship doubts: Repetitive worries about the “rightness” of a relationship or fear of not truly loving a partner.
- Symmetry or “just right” concerns: Fixation on balance, order, or the need for things to feel exactly right.
Common compulsions include:
- Mental checking: Repeatedly reviewing thoughts or memories to make sure nothing “went wrong.”
- Reassurance-seeking: Asking others for confirmation or comfort to reduce anxiety or doubt.
- Physical checking: Frequently checking things like locks, appliances, or personal safety.
- Counting: Repeating numbers or counting actions to relieve distress or prevent feared outcomes.
There is a treatment for OCD
aWhile OCD can be difficult to live with, it is highly treatable. The gold-standard treatment is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a specialized form of therapy that helps disrupt the cycle of obsessions and compulsions. Through this approach, individuals can reduce distress, build tolerance to uncertainty, and regain a greater sense of control in their lives.
Components of therapy for OCD include:
- Identifying obsessions that trigger anxiety
- Rating the intensity of distress (often on a scale from 1–100)
- Recognizing the compulsive behaviors that follow these thoughts
- Committing to gradually resist engaging in compulsions
- Practicing exposure exercises both in session and between sessions
Exposure exercises can be
Imaginal exposures: Using guided visualization to imagine feared scenarios (for example, picturing the possibility of having hit someone with a car).
In vivo exposures: Engaging directly with feared situations in real life (such as touching something perceived as “contaminated” and resisting the urge to wash afterward).
How does OCD treatment work?
OCD treatment can be uncomfortable at first, but over time, it helps retrain the brain:
Repeatedly facing anxiety-provoking situations allows the stress response to lessen gradually.
Resisting compulsions helps the brain learn that safety does not depend on rituals or avoidance.

"I have worked with Josh for 4 years and would definitely not be where I am today without him. I have been in and out of therapy for 15 or so years and Josh is by far the best therapist I have ever had. Sessions are not lectures but a sort of collaboration, where you are the driver and Josh will offer navigation suggestions, but you ultimately decide where you would like to go."

"I worked with my therapist for about a year and a half, and doing so really helped me get to a place where I could move forward with my dissertation and my life. His style made me feel comfortable and supported, and I left sessions feeling better. I also appreciated that the administrative side of Golden Vibes worked smoothly."
